EQUINE CASE STUDIES > pulmonez for eiph

SYNOPSIS: PulmonEZ for EIPH

November 29, 2004

Tidys Royal Wrangler

1997 Sorrel AQHA gelding

16.1 hh, approx. weight 1200 lbs

Owner: Debbie Archer

Tidy Boy was purchased in June of his 3 year old year as a barrel horse prospect. He had a history of being a "bleeder".  He was previously raced on the track, and had started bleeding as a 2 year old. His registration papers state that he is a certified bleeder.

Over a 5 year period of time, this horse was tried on numerous products to alleviate his pulmonary bleeding with no success. He bled through all of them, including lasix, (up to 4cc per dose), Silver Lining, HemoCease, K-C Hesperiden, A-C Bleeder, Race Paste, and Breather Powder.

He was scoped the in his 3 year old year, and found traces of blood, but no infection was present.

In spite of being a bad bleeder, Tidy Boy was an excellent barrel horse. His owner dealt with his chronic EIPH as best as she could. Giving him lots of time off after a bleeding episode. She also said he would run much better after the time off, but then his performance would worsen, until he would bleed again. Summer when hot and humid or lots of dust would be his worst times. When he bled, his owner says he would pant w/ blood gushing. His disposition would be be described as overly high strung and full of himself. When tied to the trailer, he will constantly buck and rear in place, but never pull back. His owner describes him as somewhat neurotic.

Doing research, the owner found Total Health Enhancement and decided to try PulmonEZ on Tidy Boy. PulmonEZ is specially formulated to nutritionally support horses with pulmonary issues, such as EIPH, COPD, allergic airway disease, and also those recovering from pneumonia. Total Health Enhancement recommends the horse be diagnosed and treated by a qualified veterinarian, for any pulmonary or respiratory issue.

Recommended dosing/serving for PulmonEZ is 3cc powder per 100 lbs body weight 2x daily for the first 30 days, and no hard works at all during this time. The dose must be given after 1 hour fasting with no feed, and feed must be withheld for another hour following the dose/serving. Clean water should be available at all times. Also, no nitric oxide inhibitors may be given to the horse at any time while on PulmonEZ. Nitric oxide inhibitors include bute, banamine, glucosamine, chondroitan sulfate, MSM, bosweilia, devils claw, yucca, Dexamethasone, DMSO, Legend, and tetracyclines to name the most common given to horses. For any questions about any particular substance, please call 888-422-8398. When the horse races, double dose/serving (6cc per 100 lbs body weight) as close to race time as possible, and follow with a single dose/serving after the race.

Tidy Boy's owner initially dosed/served 1x per day instead of the recommended 2x daily, and also worked cattle with the horse. After 2 weeks on the product she went to another barrel race, and his performance was improved. But he did not get his pre and post race doses/serving's. One hour and a half post race he bled mildly. His owner described it as just a trickle. The owner contacted Total Health and started the program again, dosing diligently 2x daily, and not working the horse at all for the next 30 days. Double dosing/serving before his next race and single dosing/serving after the race.

Tidy Boy has not bled since. He ran his next barrel race in October 2004, and his owner won money and other awards at the finals.

Debbie comments that her horse has not shown any signs of pulmonary bleeding, but he looks and performs better than ever. He is more focused and relaxed, and she is curious if the PulmonEZ stimulating nitric oxide production, also addressed possible ulcers. The horse is currently on maintenance doses/servings every other day, continues hard works, and has not bled again.
